心二尖瓣逆流是漏斗胸主要心臟併發病之一，可因逆流惡化而造成日後心衰竭。本研究觀察43位病患（3~24歲）Nuss手術前後均以心超波評估。一半(46.5%)病患在Nuss手術前被發現二尖瓣逆流，其中7位在手術後二尖瓣逆流消失，有2位改善。
結論： Nuss手術不只能矯治漏斗胸，也會改善心臟二尖瓣逆流。

INTRODUCTION: Mitral regurgitation (MR) has been identified as one of the major cardiac complications of funnel chest, because worsened MR would cause severe heart failure later in life. In the present study, we focused on MR in patients who underwent the Nuss operation, a newly developed procedure for the correction of funnel chest, and on that this operation could improve MR. OBJECTIVES: Forty-three patients (30 males and 13 females) with funnel chest participated in this study. All patients underwent the Nuss procedure in the Department of Pediatric Surgery in Iwakuni National Hospital between April 2000 and March 2002. Their ages at operation varied from 3 to 24 years old (the mean age was 8.9 years old).METHODS: Echocardiography was performed before and 1 to 2 weeks after surgical correction. MR findings were classified into 5 groups (none, trivial, mild, moderate, severe) and scored by degree of regurgitation assessed by echocardiography.RESULTS: About half of patients manifested MR before the surgery. In 7 patients with trivial MR before surgery, MR completely disappeared after surgery. In 2 patients with MR before surgery, MR was reduced in severity. Overall, MR was significantly reduced in severity after surgery (p<0.05). No patients newly manifested MR after surgery.DISCUSSION: About half of patients demonstrated MR (46.5%). This high incidence of MR has been identified as a risk factor for heart failure later in life. CONCLUSIONS: The Nuss procedure was an effective method not only for correcting funnel chest but also for reducing degree of MR.
